's-Hertogenbosch, familiarly called Den Bosch (literally, the Duke's Wood; Bois-le-Duc in French) is the capital of southern Dutch province of Noord Brabant. Created a city in 1185, it was an important centre in the middle ages and as late as the sixteenth century was the second-largest city in the present Netherlands. It suffered during the Dutch Wars of Independence, and later in the 19th century from blinkered municipal authorities who forbade industrial or educational development in the city. This has, however, led to the preservation of an antique townscape which has made Den Bosch a tourist centre.

The city has a population of 136,000
