Culprit

The suspect in the shooting is 24 year old Christopher Husbands. Little is known about the suspect other than the fact that he may have been born in Guyana and that he was under house arrest at the time of the shooting, awaiting trial on a sexual assault charge. He has been charged with one count of first degree murder and six counts of attempted murder in connection to the rampage.

Background

Husbands had recently held a job at a city-run after school program working with small children, playing with them, taking part in craft making sessions, helping with homework, et cetera. He was able to hold that job for more than six months before he was fired for failing to submit the criminal record background check. A policy was previously in place that allowed new hires to hold jobs for up to three months without a background check.

Connection to the Aurora, Colorado Batman premiere massacre

24 year old Jessica Ghawi had survived the Eaton Center shooting, but was killed a month later at the massacre in Aurora, Colorado at the premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. The massacre is otherwise unrelated, as are the two different lunatics responsible.
