Against medical advice (AMA) is when a patient declines treatment or tests, or leaves a facility, contrary to a physician's recommendation. Often this issue arises when a patient at a psychiatric facility insists on leaving, or his family insists on taking him away, despite a medical recommendation that he remain in the facility.

Physicians and medical facilities often have a form that is given to the patient for his signature to prove that he declined treatment or left against medical advice.[1]
