An alkali metal is an element of the periodic table. Alkali metals occur in the first column of the table, including lithium, sodium, cesium, potassium, rubidium, and francium. They are very reactive in their elemental form. In fact, they react explosively with water and thus are stored in oil under laboratory conditions.
