The American Shorthair is a breed of Domestic cat popular all over the world as extremely gifted mousers. Records show that the American Shorthair (called the British Shorthair at the time) came over with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and were used in pest control. Due to the necessity of preserving stored food, American Shorthairs commanded a high price and were rapidly bred. American Shorthairs are distinguished by having short, pointed ears, a round, broad head, and a muscular, compact body. The American Shorthair does not have a set color pattern for its fur. This breed of cat is very low maintenance, and when combined with its superb mousing ability, is a common breed on farms.
