Emir is title for nobility or high office, used in Islamic countries, meaning “commander” or “general” (later it also meant “prince”) in the Arabic language. Also spelled "Amir," with the plural form of "Umara."

A country under the authority of an Emir is said to be an "Emirate". Modern examples of Emirates include Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE.
