Antwerp (Dutch: Antwerpen, French: Anvers) is the second largest city in Belgium, and the largest city in the region of Flanders. It is the largest port of Belgium and one of the largest in Europe. Situated on the river Scheldt, it has been a major commercial centre since medieval times, although its sacking by Spanish troops during the 'Spanish Fury' of 1576 allowed Amsterdam to gain a regional commercial advantage which it has never lost. Antwerp has a population of 472,000.
