An apple is an edible fruit which comes from the apple tree (Malus sylvertris). It's widely cultivated in temperate climates. Over 7,000 varieties are known of which 40 or so are commercially important. The most popular United States variety is known as the Delicious. 15 - 20% of the world's crop is produced in the United States.[1] There are three main types of apples[Citation Needed], those used for:

  • cooking
  • dessert
  • making cider

Mostly apples are eaten on their own, like oranges.
