Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh is a Japanese animated comedy series that follows a group of teenage girls through their years in high school. It is based on a manga series of the same name. The name is a portmanteau of the author’s name (Azuma Kiyohiko) and "manga", plus “Daioh”, taken partly from the name of the magazine in which it was originally published - Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh.

The manga was published from February 1999 to June 2002, followed by a 26 episode anime series, broadcast from 8 April, 2002 to 30 September 2002. Both the anime and manga have been licensed by ADV Films and ADV Manga respectively and are available in both an English dub and print version.

Main Characters

• Mihama Chiyo, aka Chiyo-chan (voiced by Kaneda Tomoko): A ten-year old prodigy who was skipped ahead five grades due to her genius-level intellect. Chiyo comes from a wealthy family, with a large house and a summer home. She always wears her hair in pigtails.
• Sakaki, aka Sakaki-san (voiced by Asakawa Yuu): A tall and well-developed girl whose insecurity about her size prevents her from socializing easily. This gives her classmates the false impression she is 'cool' and is even referred to as a "lone wolf." However, she has a secret weakness for cute animals, especially cats, and wants to be a veterinarian.
• Takino Tomo (voiced by Higuchi Chieko): An extremely energetic, loud and impulsive girl, but also a slacker.
• Mizuhara Koyomi (voiced by Tanaka Rie): Tomo's long-suffering childhood friend, who has had to put up with Tomo's antics since elementary school. She's very studious (her grades are second only to Chiyo's), and is always worrying about her weight. She also possesses a hair-trigger temper, not helped by being around Tomo.
• Kasuga Ayumu (voiced by Matsuoka Yuki): A transfer student from the city of Osaka, which results in her being nicknamed "Osaka" by Tomo. Somewhat dim-witted, with a unique take on life.
• Kagura (voiced by Kuwashima Houko) : A very athletic girl and member of the high school swim team. She was initially in a different homeroom class than the other girls, but transferred in their second year. She initially sees Sakaki as a rival due to the other girl's natural athletic ability.
• Tanizaki Yukari (voiced by Hiramatsu, Akiko): English teacher and homeroom teacher of the girls. She tends to be impulsive and has a tendency to lose her temper. She enjoys using her knowledge of English to show off. Her informal attitude is reflected in the fact that her students feel comfortable addressing her as "Yukari" (or even "Yukari-chan"), rather than "Tanizaki-sensei".
• Kurosawa Minamo, aka Nyamo (voiced by Hisakawa, Aya): Gym teacher and homeroom teacher of Kagura in the first school year. She is a childhood friend of Yukari's, and their relationship is similar to the relationship between Tomo and Yomi. She is very down-to-earth and well-liked by the students. Her romantic past is the object of much needling by Yukari.
