Battle of Panormus
From Conservapedia
The Battle of Panormous in 251 B.C. was part of the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage. The Roman loss at the Battle of Tunes in 255 B.C. followed by the wrecking of their fleet by a storm afterwards had given the forces of Carthage a reprieve and an opportunity to fortify their position. The Battle of Panormous was the first major battle fought since that time.
In northwest Sicily the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal was defeated by Roman Consul L. Caecilius Metellus. Both armies were about 25,000 strong. Carthage made peace overtures, sending the captured Roman general Regulus on parole to at least negotiate an exchange of prisoners if satisfactory peace terms could not be reached. Regulus told his countrymen to reject the peace overtures and not to exchange prisoners. They agreed with him. Regulus then voluntarily returned to the Carthaginian camp to honor the conditions of his parole and was tortured to death.
