The Battle of Shiloh was a battle in the American Civil War, which happened in April, 1862. In the battle Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnston made an unexpected attack on Federal General Ulysses S. Grant's encamped army. The attack was successful in breaking several Federal lines, but Grant received reinforcements and after counter-attacking on the second day ultimately won the battle. This battle was critical in helping the Federals win in the Western Theater. [1]
