Bleak House is an 1853 satirical novel by Charles Dickens.
Plot
The novel follows a set of characters involved in the court case "Jarndyce and Jarndyce," particularly Esther Summerson, an orphan taken in as John Jarndyce's ward.
Satire
Bleak House is largely a satirical work, mocking the English chancery court system, which would drag cases out interminable, leaving all contested money in the hands of lawyers as fees.
It also mocks English charitable work which directed all its efforts abroad, while ignoring the pitiful living conditions of the 19th century English working-class.
