Bolton is a town in Greater Manchester, England, approximately ten miles north-west of Manchester city centre. Until 1974 it was in the county of Lancashire. The River Croal flows through the town.

Bolton Railway Station is a served by long-distance trains passing through Manchester and various local services. The A666 road connects the town with the M60 and M61 motorways.

Historically cotton-spinning and the manufacture of textiles were important to the town’s economy.

British Aerospace have facilities in Lostock, near Bolton. Tourism, IT and general manufacturing are also significant employers.

Bolton Wanderers Football Club play in the English Premiership (soccer).

Its population is 139,400 (2001).
