# Boyle's Law

**Boyle's Law** states that the volume of a sample of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure applied to the gas if the temperature is kept constant.

According to Boyle's Law:

*P*_{1}*V*_{1} = *c**o**n**s**t**a**n**t*

After the change in pressure and volume,

*P*_{2}*V*_{2} = *c**o**n**s**t**a**n**t*

Combine the two products:

*P*_{1}*V*_{1} = *P*_{2}*V*_{2}^{[1]}

When any three of the four quantities in the equation are known, the fourth can be calculated. For example, if P_{1}, V_{1} and P_{2} are known, then V_{2} can be solved by the following equation:

*V*_{2} = *P*_{1}*V*_{1} / *P*_{2}
