A candidate is someone who is being considered for a position, public office, award or honor. The act of offering oneself as a candidate is called a candidacy. In politics, once a candidate has been selected to represent a particular political party, they become the party's nominee.

The term candidate is derived from the Latin candida (white), as those seeking political office in ancient Rome would often wear bright white togas when participating in public events.
