Carrie Prejean was a contestant representing California for the 2009 Miss USA Pageant, of which she was the runner-up. Prejean created a media firestorm with her response to radically liberal, ultra-gay video blogger and Miss USA judge Perez Hilton's question about the legalization of gay marriage.
Perez Hilton: "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit?"
Carrie Prejean: "I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there but that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be between a man and a woman."
In response, many members of the audience cheered or booed. Hilton predictably disliked the answer and attacked her publicly on his blog, stating, "She gave the worst answer in pageant history. She got booed. I think that was the first time in Miss USA ever that a contestant has been booed. She lost not because she doesn't believe in gay marriage. Miss California lost because she's a dumb b****, OK?" Hilton issued a half-hearted apology, but later went on national TV to rescind his apology and to say that he said the "b-word," but was actually thinking the "c-word."
Prejean quickly became a media sensation, appearing on many news programs and talk shows. She staunchly defended her views, once stating, "I have no regrets about answering honestly. He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him. I have nothing against gay people and I didn't mean to offend anyone in my answer."
Judge Perez Hilton
The question presented to Prejean was written by Mario Lavandeira, also known as Perez Hilton, who said, "I ran it by the producers beforehand and they signed off on it and everybody thought it was a good question." In his interview with Larry King, Hilton further said, "...she knew she had lost because of that answer because it was a bad answer." King responded, "Why is it bad if it was honest?" Hilton's liberal reply was, "Honesty is great. However, in an interview this morning, she said that the audience and the judges expected her to be politically correct. You want to know what? Yes. I do expect Miss USA to be politically correct."
Absence of Rights Groups
The ACLU, so-called free speech defenders has offered no defense of Prejean's freedom of conscience. The National Organization of Women is absent from defending Prejean against hate speech attacks directed torward her. It is the double standard by liberals and their leftwing agenda, who fear conservatives and traditional values.
Liberal backlash and aftermath
Liberals across the board began a vicious campaign of character assassination against Prejean because she dared use her First Amendment rights in a manner they found unfit. MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and gay columnist for the Village Voice Michael Musto leveled extremely mean-spirited barbs at Prejean on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann."
An anonymous source also leaked controversial photos of a 17-year-old Prejean to the celebrity gossip website TMZ in an attempt to cost her her title as Miss California and discredit her as a supporter of traditional marriage. However, in response to the attacks, Donald Trump, owner of the Miss USA Pageant, backed Prejean and allowed her to retain her crown. In his statement, Trump pointed out that even President Obama and Hillary Clinton share the same opinion on marriage as Prejean. He also revealed that Perez Hilton (referred to as "Judge #8") gave Prejean very low scores, but Trump stated that it did not cost her the Miss USA crown, contrary to Hilton's claims.
An emotional Prejean responded to her critics, stating:
"I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos taken of me as a teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid website that openly mocks me for my Christian faith. I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be, but these attacks on me and others who speak in defense of traditional marriage are intolerant and offensive. While we may not agree on every issue, we should show respect for others' opinions and not try to silence them through vicious and mean-spirited attacks."
Unsurprisingly, the attacks against Prejean continued in response.
