American historical figures, and holders of offices reserved for citizens - these make sense in this category. Otherwise, it's not who they are but what they do that counts. --Ed Poor Talk 07:55, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

Perhaps to give due consideration to Andy's post on the matter, Ed Bot could move all articles bearing this category to United States Citizens? That could nest under United States of America....and their chosen professions or what they are notable for, under that....--₮K/Talk 08:00, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
First, I'm having the bot move American Singers to Singers. I simply don't feel that being "American" is such a big deal. Is being American what they're famous for? Now, maybe Category:Native Americans would help a student of history to find Sitting Bull or Geronimo. Think of the reader and how he would look up information. --Ed Poor Talk 08:05, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
Fine by me, Ed. I was merely suggesting an alternative, fitting within Andy's post, because someone created "Americans" and someone created "African Americans", therefore suggesting Sysops had discussed and fully approved those actions, and they were deemed to be needed. Since adding notable Americans to their own category was previously discussed, informally between myself, Azriphale and some others, I was just passing on what had already been covered. ;-) --₮K/Talk 08:24, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
