Cenote Zaci in Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico
A
cenote (from
Mayan dzonot) is a collapsed underground
limestone cavern that contains
water. They are found throughout the northern part of the
Yucatán peninsula and are part of the underground
river system. Owing to the lack of any surface rivers in this area and the irregular rainfall, they were particularly important as a water source for the ancient Maya and played an important part in their religious ceremonies.
