He brain-washed a devoted group of followers into various murders, with the hope of starting a race war and being the leader of the post-apocalyptic world he said the war would create. Because Manson directed the members of the cult to commit multiple murders, he was convicted of the murders under a joint-responsibility rule which makes it a crime to be involved in a conspiracy to commit murder.
Manson held notions commonly regarded as ludicrous; for example, he believed that the Beatles were his disciples, and their song "Helter Skelter" inspired his idea. Manson was a racist who hated black people and burned a swastika scar on his forehead. He is a Satanist and said that he is Jesus Christ and Satan in one person and the Reincarnation of Aleister Crowley.
