Children's Crusade

The Children's Crusade is the name given to the ill-conceived crusades which grew out of a series of visions by children, who claimed to have been told by Jesus in visions that they should go the the Holy Land and convert Muslims to Christianity. There were two distinct Children's Crusades, both of which originated around the year 1212 A.D., one in France, and one in Germany. Exactly how many of the participants were young children is not clear, due to the fact that chroniclers used the medieval Latin word pueri, which can mean either children or simply "boys" in the sense of younger persons or servants of any age. The Children's Crusade ended tragically when the petite crusaders were tricked and sold into slavery by greedy merchantmen.^[1]
