Gameplay

It was designed as a typical fighter game in space. The player flew in a single man space fighter and was given missions that involved fighting enemy ships. It had primary weapons (lasers) and secondary weapons (missiles, torpedoes, grappler). It used a strange combat feature where the player would have to use AS (Anti-Shield) weapons to eliminate enemy shields and then normal weapons to destroy them. More advanced weapons ignored this distinction.

The game also included a feature where the player could learn about the various aspects of the Colony wars universe. This included knowledge on ships, geography and history.

Plot

The earth empire expanded to the ends of the universe. The League of Free Worlds was formed by members of this empire who wanted to break off from Earth. They formed their forces in the Gallonigher system under a mysterious man called "The Father". After the Impirial Navy defeated them at the Battle of Bennay they began to hide in the Gallonigher. The game begins with the Navy beginning to invade Gallonigher. The League prepares to fight them and end the Empire's tyranny over the other systems. The player is a fighter pilot for The League of Free Worlds at this time. After a group of missions a voice will begin narrating the war while a video gives an overview of the successes and failures of The League. A unique feature in this game was that the players success or failure in the missions would lead to different scenarios in the war. These could include; total defeat of The League, total defeat of The Empire, a schism within The League, a truce with The Empire, or leaving the Empire to destroy itself through civil war.

Good and Evil

The game represents The League of Free Worlds as the good side for defending themselves against The Empire's tyranny. They also decide to invade the Empire to prevent further tyranny for other systems.

"Now we were fighting to defend our homes and families."

Imperialism was also displayed as being evil.

"The Navy was stretched across the galaxy, governing and oppressing, and sending the spoils back to Earth."

However as the League gains victory against the Navy they expand themselves over the galaxy. They attempt to bring freedom to the worlds but in the struggle become guilty of imperialism. In Colony Wars II: Vengeance the league becomes corrupt itself. The main theme between the first two games is that power corrupts.
