Colony Wars III: Red Sun (ESRB rating: K-A) is a video game released for the Playstation 1 in 2000 by Psycognosis. It is the last of a game trilogy.

Changes in Gameplay

The controls were almost exactly the same as in Colony Wars and Colony Wars II: Vengeance. When battling fleet ships, however, the player would not be attacked by the fleet ship but by turrets all along it's hull. The turrets could be eliminated without destroying the ship. This feature was absent in the last two colony wars games. The player also had engage many enemy fighters at once. This was also a change from the last two games. The fighters were weaker but their numbers were unrealistic. The player had to buy his own weapons and ships. The player could also use early on a laser that effected both shields and hull, however the player also had the option of using special anti-hull lasers or anti-shield lasers.

Plot

The plot went away from the norm in this game. It was no longer centralized around the war between the Colonial Navy and the League of Free Worlds (although this was involved the subject of some of the later missions). Rather than different scenarios the game had one story line that the player had to follow. It relates the journey of a mercenary fighter pilot named Valdemar. He is being led by a mysterious man who calls himself The General to chase after the ship called the Red Sun. The Red Sun is discovered to have a mission to destroy humanity and Valdemar has to stop it. During his pursuit Valdemar can enter into other conflicts as a mercenary. These are side missions for which Valdemar can earn money to buy weapons and ships.

Characters

Valdemar is the protagonist and begins as a miner who is "down on his luck". When The General meets him in his dreams he decides to leave onboard a cheap fighter and pursue his dreams which are controlled by the general.

The General is Valdemar's commander in the pursuit of the Red Sun. He has a small group of followers of whom Valdemar is the highest ranking. The General does not explain his actions and Valdemar seems unable to resist him. The General was once The Father in Colony Wars. He was the mysterious leader of the League of Free Worlds.

Diva is Valdemar's partner in the pursuit of the Red Sun. She is an intelligence officer for the League of Free Worlds and is valuable as a fighter pilot and informant. She is killed in battle late in the game.

Other sides besides in conflict during the game include; The League of Free Worlds, The Colonial Navy, The Donachet, The Unisoft Corporation, The Dirt Warriors, The Empiriet, The Rebels, The League Police, and the Shah'har. These include aliens and humans. The Empiriet constructs the Red Sun and gives it to the Sha'har who (are not humans) intend to use it destroy humanity. The League of Free Worlds is a prominent ally of Valdemar and helps him destroy the Red Sun.
