Crime and Punishment is a conservative 1866 novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Plot

The novel, in many regards a psychological, criminal novel, follows several weeks in the life of Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, a poor student living in St. Petersburg. Raskolnikov plans and carries out a crime, killing an old money-lender, and is then tortured by guilt. He finally confesses to the crime after acknowledging the redemptive power of Christ, learned from the virtuous prostitute Sonia.
