Cumbernauld is a New Town in central Scotland, oft described as the Buckle in the Central Belt. It was designated a New Town in 1955 under the UK Government postwar policy of urban dispersal. Unlike most British new towns its designers eschewed the neighbourhood unit theory, opting instead for a monocentric design principle.

In 2005 the Town Centre won a public nomination for demolition in the Channel 4 TV series Demolition, where it was voted "the worst building in Britain". [1]
