Ancient cymbals, dating to the time of the Pharaohs, from the Louvres collection

A cymbal is a flat, metal percussion instrument that makes a loud, resonant sound when struck. Cymbals come in a variety of sizes, from a couple of inches in diameter to well over a foot, and are used in classical orchestras, drum kits in pop and jazz music, and many forms of traditional music.

Cymbals are a very old instrument: they are mentioned in the Old Testament in Psalm 150:5, so we know that they were in use in King David's time, centuries before the birth of Christ.
