David Norris

David Norris is a Senator in the Irish Senate. He hold the landmark of being the first openly gay elected member of parliament in Ireland, when he was elected by Trinity College Dublin into the Senate of Ireland. He has campaigned on gay rights and civil liberties, as well as being a former head of the English department in Trinity College (Dublin University). A renowned James Joyce scholar, he plays a large part in Dublin's annual 'Bloomsday' festivities. Senator Norris is known for his keen wit and is largely popular among the Irish electorate, despite having the twin stumbling block in Ireland of both being homosexual and being Methodist, as it is notoriously hard to advance in politics in Ireland being one of either of these groups.
