Dennis Moore, born November 8, 1945 (age 78), was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011, having represented the 3rd congressional district of Kansas. As a Democrat in a very Republican state, Moore has been a constant target of Republican challengers, but has managed to stay in power with a relatively high amount of popularity. (His district had consisted of the affluent suburban Johnson County, the poorer Wyandotte County, as well as part of Douglas County, which includes the liberal college town of Lawrence.) In 2006, he defeated Republican challenger Chuck Ahner by a margin of 30%. Moore portrays himself as a moderate, and often breaks ranks with his party on votes, especially on fiscal matters. However, he is staunchly liberal on issues such as abortion.
