Double Jeopardy

The double jeopardy law inhibits a defendant from being tried for the same crime twice. The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states:

“Nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.”

The Double Jeopardy Clause protects against multiple punishments for the same offense.
