Elephant in the room

An elephant in the room is a big problem which won't go away, but which no one wants to acknowledge. For some reason, nobody is willing to deal with it directly. It often becomes a taboo subject, and anyone trying to address the matter is hushed up, shunned, belittled or even punished.
