'Emptiness (or vanity, or futility) is the term used in the Book of Ecclesiastes to describe all worldly endeavors. Everything that is done on Earth will eventually pass away, so no matter how magnificent a person's achievements may be, they will come to nothing in the end. The only way to avoid this ultimate emptiness is to embrace eternal, spiritual rewards instead of material, earthly ones.
