The Establishment Clause is the first clause in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. It reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ....

The establishment clause creates the basis for separation of church and state. Court rulings against school prayer and public displays of the Ten Commandments have been justified under the Establishment Clause.[1]
