Ethenol, also known as vinyl alcohol, is a flammable chemical compound with a strong odor, and is a frequent contaminant in alcoholic beverages. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as acetol. The chemical formula is CH2=CHOH, C2H3OH. It is the first of the olefinic alcohol, and is a common starting point for organic syntheses. The most common method of manufacture in industry is the hydration of acetylene, using a phosphoric acid catalyst.
