Extremist Attitude

Extremist attitude is an attitude common in groups of people who feel strongly about an issue, especially when they feel their opinion is being attacked. The style typically not used by all individuals in a group.

Characteristics

Extremist attitudes result in malicious debate tactics, including:

  1. Over-reliance on emotions during debates
  2. Use of ad hominem attacks (attacking an advocate of a claim, instead of the claim itself)
  3. Use of other logical fallacies, including straw man, cherry-picking, and appeal to tradition
  4. Attacking small linguistic errors of perceived opponents, such as spelling and grammar
  5. Making up insulting names

The Extremist attitude also manifests itself in:

  1. Joy in seeing people from "the other side" emotionally, politically, physically, or personally damaged
  2. False grouping of opponents into clear cut groups

Examples of Groups with Extremist Attitude individuals

  • Left-wing, right-wing, and other political groups
  • Fans of computer programs and games
  • Fans of games in general
  • Religion-related organizations or doctrines (including anti-religion groups)
  • Cults
  • Some Wikipedia editors
