Fairport Convention is an English folk rock band, widely regarded as the first electric folk band. The band formed in 1967, playing a variation of psychedelic rock. The band soon mixed these rock influences with the styles of traditional English folk music on celebrated albums such as Unhalfbricking and Liege and Leaf. Though once notable for its several line-up changes, the current line-up has been relatively stable since the mid-1980s.Several former members of the band, including Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, have achieved considerable fame as solo artists. Denny's success was cut short by her untimely death due to a traumatic brain hemorrhage, though not before contributing to releases by Strawbs, Fotheringay and Led Zeppelin (she is notable as being the only guest singer ever to appear on a Led Zeppelin album). Thompson continues to be successful, and is often voted one of the best acoustic guitarists in musicians' polls. Former bassist Dave Pegg also did a stint as bassist for the progressive rock band Jethro Tull.

In 1977, Fairport Convention founded the Cropredy Festival (now "Fairport's Cropredy Convention"), an annual folk festival held in the village of Cropredy, Oxfordshire, which continues to attract a large number of fans.
