Gangsta Rap is a sub-genre of rap popularized in the mid 1980's by Ice T, N.W.A, Eazy-E and others. Gangsta rap is characterized by its violent lyrics, often dealing with troubled inner-city youth. Gangsta rap is criticized for its positive portrayal of violent felonies, misogyny, and drug use.

Gangsta rap first entered the mainstream in 1988 with the seminal album Straight Outta Compton and its massively successful single, **** Tha Police, which is now listed at #147 on Rolling Stone's list of all-time greatest songs.
