Gauteng is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The name is taken from the Sotho word for Gold, as the Witwatersrand is situated within its borders.

Situated in central South Africa, to the north of the Free State and Vaal River, it was originally part of the Transvaal, until the new demarcation of provinces following South Africa's democratic elections in 1994. For a time it was called "PWV", after Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vaal Triangle.

Despite being the smallest of the provinces, it is both the economic hub of the country, and the most populous province. The largest cities within the province are Johannesburg, Pretoria (Tswane), Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark.

The current premier of the province is Mbhazima Shilowa.
