Studio Ghibli (株式会社スタジオジブリ Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Jiburi) - pronounced "jiburi" or "jee blee" - is a Japanese animation studio, founded in 1985 by two of Japan's greatest animation producers - Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

Ghibli means "hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert". The name was used for Italian scouting airplanes during World War 2. Miyazaki, who has a deep love of both aeroplanes and Italy, named his studio after it, as he felt the aim of Studio Ghibli was to blow new wind into the Japanese animation industry. The company's logo is an image of Totoro, from the film, "My Neighbour Totoro."

Totoro waits to welcome visitors to the Ghibli museum

A museum, showcasing and honouring the works of Studio Ghibli opened in Mikata, Tokyo in 2001. Amongst its attractions are several films, including a spin-off of "Tototro", which are only ever shown at the museum. Visitors may only watch a feature once per visit and the films on offer are rotated on a monthly basis.

Under the direction of Miyazaki and Takahata, Ghibli has produced many animation masterpieces, including the Academy Award winning "Spirited Away." The quality of their output, combined with the marketing agreement with Disney to license their work outside Japan, has probably done more to showcase anime to the wider world, than any other production house. However, their most famous film, "Grave of the Fireflies", directed by Isao Takahata, and "Only Yesterday" remain the only films which Disney has declined to distribute.
