A Godparent, Godfather or Godmother, is a title given by the Catholic Church through their Code of Canon Law, describing the sponsor and their lifetime guidance of the newly baptized and newly confirmed members of Church. Godparents are not only for infants, as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) has sponsors.

""Parents and godparents, this light has been entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly."

Godfather is a title given to Sicilian mob bosses.
