The Great Fire of Rome was a massive fire which started on July 19, 64AD. The fire destroyed the Circus Maximus. It is suspected that the Roman Emperor at the time, Nero, started the fire himself, and he was said to have fiddled as Rome burned. Nero used the Great Fire as an excuse to increase the persecution of Christians, claiming they started it.
