Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, as well as the focal point of trade, industry, and politics for most of Vietnam's last 1,000 years. It was the capital of French Indochina in 1902–1939 and in 1945-1954. Hanoi was also the capital of North Vietnam (1954-1975).
Like many cities in East Asia, Hanoi is a melange of a 3,000 year old culture with a bustling modern city. Ancient art, architecture, and religious works can be seen throughout the city alongside cafés, internet hubs, and sports complexes.
