Herostratus was an ancient madman who burned the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, in 356 B.C. According to the story, he claimed to have done it purely so that his name would be remembered. The authorities of the time therefore decreed that nobody should mention his name, to deny him the infamy he craved. However, despite their efforts, his name is still remembered millennia after the event.
