Hurricane Ike was a category 2 hurricane and was expected to make landfall in Houston, Texas on September 14, 2008 as a Category 3 with winds exceeding 131 miles an hour. Ike has been ranked as the seventh most expensive catastrophe in the United States history. Mike Barry of the Insurance Information Institute in New York said there was $8.1 billion in insured damage from Hurricane Ike.
