A portrait of Oliver Cromwell, the primary figure of the Interregnum

The Interregnum, or English Interregnum (literally, "between Kings") refers to the period of English history between the execution of Charles I in 1649 and restoration of Charles II in 1660.

The interregnum included the Commonwealth, a Republican government which gave way to the Protectorate, which saw Oliver Cromwell elevated to the status of Lord Protector. After Cromwell's death, his son, Richard took the reigns, but was soon removed by Parliament, which restored Charles II.
