Irina Gueorguieva Bokova (Sofia, 1952 - ) is the current Director-General of UNESCO (the first woman in this role). She is a Bulgarian politician and former Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to France. From November 1996 to February 1997 she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria.

Bokova studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and at the University of Maryland (School of Public Affairs, Washington). Her fields of interest include European integration issues and women's equality. [1]
