J.J. Thomson (1856 - 1940) was a chemist who experimented with the Cathode ray tube (technology that was instrumental in developing the television). It was during his study that he discovered the electron in 1897. He proposed the (later discredited) "Plum pudding" model of the atom. Interestingly, it was Thomson's housekeeper who originally named the model.
