Joe 90 was a British Supermarionation series created by Gerry Anderson.

Premise

The series took place in the c.2030s AD (thus meaning that the show took place 30 years before earlier series such as Thunderbirds), when young Joe McClaine, the adoptive son of Prof. Ian "Mac" McClaine, becomes a secret agent for the W.I.N. (World Intelligence Network). This is made possible by Prof. McClaine's BIG RAT computer (BIG RAT meaning Brain Impulse Galvanascope Record And Transfer), which allows the brainwave patterns of any person in the world to be temporarily stored in Joe's mind, and can be utilised using a special electronic device built into the frames of Joe's glasses.

Because of this, Joe - as a child - is able to move about without suspicion, and can utilise any useful information on behalf of W.I.N. on a mission without arousing the suspicion of his enemies, thus making him a unique agent of the organisation.

Production

Joe 90 was first released on September 29 1968 as the next Supermarionation series after the success of Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. It would run until April 20, 1969 with a total of 30 episodes. Like its predecessor, Joe 90 continued the darker themes introduced in Captain Scarlet as opposed to the upbeat optimism of Thunderbirds.

It was whilst Anderson was working on Joe 90 that he envisaged his next project, The Secret Service, originally intended as a follow-up to Joe 90 set around a rural vicarage. Several marionettes used in Joe 90 would later be re-used in The Secret Service.

Film adaptation

A film adaptation of Joe 90 is rumoured to be in production.[1]
