Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was born July 1951. She is the eldest child of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the brother of President John F. Kennedy. Two days after President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Kathleen's father Robert wrote his 12-year-old daughter a note on White House stationery: "As the oldest of the next generation you have a particular responsibility... Be kind to others and work for your country. Love, Daddy."[1]

She is married to David Lee Townsend [2] and they have four daughters.[3] Her family nicknames include “The Nun” and “Clean Kennedy".[4]

David Brock, American Bridge and Rock Creek Group

Kathleen and David co-founded American Bridge 21st Century in 2010.[5] American Bridge was set up to raise and spend unlimited funds to influence the upcoming 2012 elections on behalf of Democrats. According to Newsmax.com, "American Bridge 21st Century was founded by David Brock, head of the George Soros-supported Media Matters for America, which is a so-called media watchdog group that has basically been on a mission to destroy Fox News and other perceived enemies of its liberal agenda."[6] Upon founding American Bridge, Kennedy Townsend proclaimed “I want to compete dollar to a dollar with the Republicans and I want to beat them.”[7]

In addition to her American Bridge 21st Century duties, Kennedy Townsend also serves as Senior Advisor to Rock Creek Group, a leading hedge fund who derives much of its revenue by managing investments for multi-billion dollar state pension funds. The hedge fund has strong ties to Democrats. Hedge funds such as Rock Creek Group are very popular sources of donations, funneling hundreds of millions of dollars to Democratic candidates and tax-exempt organizations like American Bridge 21st Century.

Rock Creek Group and other hedge funds like them contribute far more to Democrats than they do to Republicans.[8][9][10]

In Early Life

Kennedy Townsend grew up the eldest of 11 children. Like a typical Kennedy, Kathleen grew up with all the privileges of money and power. She attended the prestigious Putney School in Vermont and Harvard. She later graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law and received her J.D. in 1978. [11][12] Also like many Kennedys, she has experienced her share of tragedies. Oddly enough her name was given to her in honor of her aunt whom she never met named Kathleen Cavendish, who died in a plane crash 1948. Other Kennedys have been in plane crashes as well such as her uncle Senator Ted Kennedy[13] and cousin John Kennedy Jr., who died in a plane crash in 1999.[14]

In Politics

Based on her track record, American Bridge 21st Century’s chances of succeeding are slim. Kennedy Townsend has not been successful on her own politically. She ran for the US House of Representatives in 1984 and lost in a landslide 59% to 41%, the first Kennedy to lose a general election. She was elected Maryland Lieutenant Governor from 1995 to 2003. She was the running mate of Governor Parris Glendening and she benefitted mightily by being on a joint ticket.

When she ran for Governor for in 2002, she was defeated by Republican Robert Ehrlich, the first Republican governor for Maryland in almost 40 years. The election was supposed to be a slam dunk for Kennedy Townsend and the Democrats. According to CNN, “Townsend, Glendening's deputy, was supposed to benefit from her party's voter registration edge, her formidable war chest and her famous family name (she's the daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy). But she stumbled frequently during the campaign, failing to invigorate the party's base.”[15]

In 2008, bucking the rest of the Kennedy family such as Senator Ted Kennedy, she endorsed Hillary Clinton in the Democratic Primary. David Brock actively supported Hillary Clinton as well.

As we know, Clinton ultimately lost to Barack Obama. Because they backed Hillary Clinton so strongly, neither Kathleen nor David Brock have not been wholeheartedly embraced by the Obama backers who are currently in power.

Other Activities

Kennedy Towsend is the author of “How Today's Churches Mixed God with Politics and Lost Their Way”[16] She has also sat on several boards and advisory councils over the years. She is Chair of the Institute for Human Virology at the University of Maryland. She is on the boards of directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, the Points of Light Foundation, Catholic Democrats and the Center for American Progress. Townsend is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Inter-American Dialogue.[17]
