The Kaufmann-Bucherer-Neumann experiments were an attempt to measure if and how the inertial mass of an object changed due to an increase in its velocity. The Theory of Relativity predicts a substantial change in the inertial mass based on a substantial change in velocity, while Newtonian mechanics does not expect any such change.
