Khmer is an important Mon-Khmer (and thus Austro-Asiatic) langauge. It is the official language of Cambodia and widely spoken by peoples in Vietnam, Thailand, and the United States. It is written with an alphabet, and is different from many South-East Asian languages in that it is not tonal, thus rendering it easier for English speakers.

Khmer has an alphabet and writing system of its own that is somewhat related to the Thai language, but with the additional advantage of its own numbering system that is still used in day-to-day life, although Arabic numerals are used in most technology.
