Kimi ga yo (The reign of our emperor) is the national anthem of Japan. It is based on a Japanese tanka written in the Heian period, but with a tune written in 1880. It was officially recognized as the national anthem in 1999, despite it being the de facto anthem of Japan for many years.[Citation Needed] [Who says?]
